RI's Spa Industry Grows 7 PCT Annually

Nusa Dua (Antara Bali) - Indonesia's spa industry grows by an average of 7 percent a year, making it one of the Asian countries recording significant growth for the industry, a minister said.

"Indonesia is among the three Asian countries recording the fairly high growth of spa industry. It comes next to India and China," Culture and Tourism Minister Jero Wacik said at a press conference following a global spa summit here on Monday night.

He said his ministry was serious about developing the spa industry as it had the great potential to contribute to the tourism industry.

In addition, the spa industry also employed a great deal of workers, he said. However, he added he did not know exactly the number of workers employed in the spa industry nationwide.

"We have not yet made a survey on the number of workers employed in the spa industry because it is something new in this country. However, we will soon conduct such a survey to see the extent to which the industry has contributed to revenues from the tourism industry estimated to reach US$7-8 billion," he said.

Meanwhile, Jeff Matthews, co-chair of the 2011 global spa summit, said the Indonesian spa industry continued to grow. Indonesia was the first country in Southeast Asia to develop the spa industry as modern business.

According to data, spa industries worldwide had a total turnover of US$260 billion, he said. "But we don't know how much is the turnover of the spa industry in Indonesia," he said.

Spa Finder CEO Peter Ellies  who is also a board founder member of the global spa summit said Bali was chosen to host the summit at the request of delegations to such a summit held in Turkey last year.

Global spa summit is an annual international meeting to discuss spa industry and health.  The Bali's meeting brought together 296 participants from 38 countries.(*)
