Govt Vows To Hold Routine Meetings With Students

Jakarta (Antara Bali) -- The government will hold routine meetings with students to discuss policies that do not favor the people, Presidential Chief of Staff Luhut Pandjaitan said.

"At the meetings, several members of the presidential staff will represent the government," he told students who were demonstrating outside Merdeka Palace here on Thursday evening.

The meetings will serve as a means of communication to discuss government programs that draw serious attention from students but do not satisfy people's interests, he explained.

According to Pandjaitan, the routine meetings will reflect a modest and dignified form of communication.

"As younger generations, you have laid a good foundation," he remarked.

He further expressed hope that interaction between the government and students will be conducted with good intention and spirit by upholding the noble norms of Indonesia.

Pandjaitan, accompanied by Cabinet Secretary Andi Widjajanto, met the demonstrating students after holding talks with 50 chiefs of students' executive boards (BEM) from across the country.

He added that the meeting ran cordially and toughly. "Representatives of students organizations came up with mature suggestions, which are worthy of praise," he pointed out.

The meeting lasted from 2.00 p.m. to 5.30 p.m.. After Pandjaitan delivered his address, the students gradually dispersed and left Merdeka Palace. (WDY)
